Municipal Vision of Habra Municipality:

Whenever this Municipality thinks of development, it does so in terms of improvement in the Livelihood quality of the people especially the weaker section of the population who can really test the fruits of urban developments. The areas where this municipality will focus are: clean and green environment, Improvement of Health, safe drinking water, spread of education and cultural activities, games and sports, improvement of inter ward communication, street and street lighting, drainage system, creation of employment opportunity and development of efficient administration and financial management.                                                                                                                                                                                                                           

OVERVIEW OF THE MUNICIPALITY:

Historical background:

Habra Municipality is situated within Habra police station under Barasat subdivision in the district of North 24- parganas. It was established in 1979 with a Government nominated Board. Initially nineteen wards were carved out of Panchayet areas to make way for the Municipality. The mauzas included with it are Habra, Kamarthuba,Joygachi,, Hatthuba, Kamarthuba, Ashrafabad Hijalpukur, Nagarthuba, Haria, and Akrampur.. At that time population of Habra Municipality stood at 72,500 approx. Later, three more mauzas viz. Ayra, Belgoria and Daharthuba included out of panchayet area. Currently this Municipality has an area of 21.82 sq. km and population as per census 2001 is 1, 27,602.

            At the outset the Municipality ran its offices from a rented building at Jessore Road, opposite Habra Police Station. In 1984 the Municipality relocated to its own building at Promode Dasgupta  Sarani, Hijalpukur, Habra.

The first General Election to the Office of the Councilors of Habra Municipality was held on 1988 and has just completed 5th General Election in 2008.

Administrative boundaries:

The municipal town of Habra is located within the Barasat subdivision in the district of North 24 Parganas, West Bengal. It is situated at a distance of 45 Km.  from Kolkata. The Municipality is surrounded by the Bergoom Panchayat   & a part of Nadia border line in the North and Prithiba Panchayat in the south, Ashoknagar-Kalyangar Municipality in the North-West and Maslandapur-II in the North-East. (Geographical coordinates: 22° 50′ 4″ North, 88° 37′ 39″ East)

Transport & Communication:

The town has well connected transport facilities with Broad Gauge Railways line in the Sealdah Bongaon Section of Eastern Railways. Apart from this railway connection, this town also enjoys good linkage by road (N H 35) with other towns of the district.

The hinterlands as well as other sub-division town are also well connected by the state highway and National Highway. Habra Municipality enjoys pretty good road network connectivity with the surrounding areas. 

Economic base:

The Habra Municipality is a trade base town. It is one of the biggest trade center in West Bengal. This whole sale business center is renowned for selling Jute, Rice, Building materials, cloths, electronic goods etc. There are some small industries like candle factory, bakery, ice-candy factory & saw mill. Most of the people are engaged in retail & wholesale   business.  On the other hand, some people are engaged in different types of jobs like- service holder in State & Central Government Offices, Banks, Municipality, State Electricity Board, schools, colleges etc. Few people are engaged as labour, and daily labour in different sectors.      

Festivals and occasions:

Like all other parts of West Bengal Habra celebrates most of the common Pujas and festival but Manasa puja is a special occasion when fairs are held. Secular festival like Banipur Loka Utsab is an important signature event of Habra with it Bullock cart race.

Climate:

The climate of Habra is hot, humid, in summer and cold in winter .The maximum temperature is 380C which is observed in the month May to mid June. The minimum temperature is 140C. Average annual rainfall is 1442 mm.

Soil and Ground water scenario:

The soil of Habra is alluvial and fertile. Availability of ground water is very easy although in some areas it is contaminated with Arsenic and iron content is rather high compared to other areas.

Heritage:

Habra, being a relatively new place inhabited mostly by settlers from across the border, it has few heritages like Nagarthuba Rajbari-where the relics still exist, Belgoria mosque- one of the oldest mosque located at ward no 1 and was  built in 19th  century,  Nilkuti  house was built  for indigo cultivation in 19th century. It is fabled that once there were some traces of Buddist living in the area.

            Habra Municipality covers an area of 21.81square kilometres. It encompasses a population of 1, 27,695 in the last National Census. Male population is 78,253 and female population is 70,968.
